Smell sculpture

This sculpture is a bar of soap made of garlic oil presented on a ceramic dish. Garlic has long been believed across many cultures to possess special qualities - it is said to be able to clean the blood, to ward off vampires and to keep common colds at bay. Maciá is interested in the power-relations involved in cleansing, asking who has the right to clean others.

‘Garlic Soap’ reflects on the languages, peoples and beliefs that have been eradicated in the name of cleaning.
