Ten Notes for a Human Symphony

Smell sculpture
This installation is a symphony of human scents created from ten interpretations of smell that have been taken from different locations
around the world.
The source is human hair gathered in
Argentina, India, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, Russia, Syria and Tibet.
In each case, Maciá sought out older people who had not used chemical treatments on their hair.
The hairs were empirically analysed in a Paris perfume laboratory using a technique known as ‘headspace.’
The results were then given to a master perfumer who interpreted the results, creating a new smell for each country.
Each scent was presented across a series of fabric curtains moving, releasing into the exhibition space a symphony of human smells.
