'Transition' is an olfactory-acoustic sculpture housed in a six-metre long tunnel where people are invited to sit, listen, smell and wait. Collaborating with a senior perfumer, Maciá worked with a list of plants that are near extinction to create the smell of 'transition' that fills this tunnel. The soundtrack too is immersive; it is a composition of calls by animals that are likewise under threat.
There is ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ is an aphorism suggesting hope, yet it is hard to believe such a platitude. The natural historian Professor Richard Fortey, however, notes that extinction is a process of natural transition, and asks us to rethink our fears. Yet, for these species there will be no return.
