Sound sculpture

“Vesper” is a symphony of joyous female recollections. It brings together 55 positive testimonies of women from the Caribbean. Each speaks her own language, and the voices are arranged antiphonally.

There are six official languages of the Caribbean islands and coast, reflecting the movement of people, of trade, of power, and of colonialism. Alongside are indigenous languages and constantly evolving creole languages.

As a Caribbean artist, I was interested to make a monument for women that celebrates positive memories. The Caribbean is full of monuments of men, most of them colonial enforcers. “Vesper” places Caribbean woman at the centre, calling for them to be heard.
